SUMMARY:Membrane Proteins Conference 7–9 April 2026 Leonardo Royal Hotel\, Birmingham\, UK
DESCRIPTION:Membrane Proteins Conference Leonardo Royal Hotel\, Birmingham\, UK | 7-9 April 2026 \nMembrane proteins have important roles across all kingdoms of life. They are involved in a myriad of diverse and fundamental biological processes\, which include the transport of substrates across membranes\, relaying signals between the cell and its environment\, the catalysis of chemical reactions\, cell adhesion and influencing the immune response. However\, whilst between 20-30% of the genome of most organisms encode for membrane proteins\, the role of these systems remains poorly understood. The aim of this meeting is to bring together researchers from these areas who are experts in these cutting-edge technologies to promote the sharing of knowledge and ideas \nOral communication slots are available at this meeting. \nAll attendees\, particularly researchers in the early stages of their career\, are invited to submit a poster abstract for consideration as an oral communication. SUMMARY:Plant proteins: functions\, regulation\, production and utility
DESCRIPTION:Plants produce an enormous variety of proteins that have structural\, enzymatic and storage roles. They regulate metabolism and control key processes such as cell growth\, division and differentiation. These participate in inter-organism communication facilitating the optimisation of beneficial interactions and defence responses to herbivores and pathogens\, such as bacteria\, viruses\, fungi\, and insects. \nProteomics studies have revealed that approximately 50% of plant proteins are found in more than one place at the same time. This dynamic distribution not only highlights the complex and often overlapping roles of proteins within plant cells but also challenges traditional views of protein function. Post-translational modifications (PTMs) regulate plant protein function by modulating activity\, localization\, and interaction with other molecules and proteins. Protein/protein interactions in biomolecular condensates\, formed through liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of proteins and RNA\, provide a dynamic environment for concentrating and localizing molecules. Crucially\, plant proteins supply all essential amino acids required in the human diet. They are environmentally friendly\, high-quality sources for animals and humans with meat alternatives made from plant-based ingredients becoming increasingly popular in the human diet. However\, we need to understand more about the diversity of plant-based proteins and develop methodologies for efficient production and functionalisation at scale.\nFeaturing presentations from four Biochemical Society Award winners\, this meeting will provide a platform to facilitate the open sharing of information on plant proteins\, allowing participants from academia\, industry and regulation to engage in meaningful debate to identify new avenues of research and knowledge gaps\, as well as potential solutions for optimising plant protein production and utility through processing and functionalisation. \nSchedule:\nTuesday 21/10/2025 09:00 – 17:00\nWednesday 22/10/2025 09:00 – 17:00\nThursday 23/10/2025 09:00 – 15:00 \nAttendees:\nRiaan Fox \nBook a Meeting

The equipment used to purify proteins continues to evolve in both functionality and utility. This training course\, hosted at the University of Bedfordshire’s STEM Building\, aims to expose participants to the latest hardware required for protein purification and biophysical measurements.\nAttendees will gain hands-on experience of cell lysis using the CF1 cell disrupter from Constant Systems; protein purification using AKTA systems and Unicorn software; the analysis of protein – ligand interactions using the NanoTemper Monolith and the new multi wavelength Beckman Coulter Life Sciences Optima analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC). Short lectures will provide background theory on the techniques used.\nDelegates at this training event are encouraged to bring posters to help stimulate discussion. These could include examples of your work with proteins\, opportunities to troubleshoot issues you have come across in working with proteins or examples of how you might want to apply skills learned at the event to your research. \nSchedule:\nMonday 17th of April 2025 08:50 – 18:30\nTuesday 18th of April 2025 09:00 – 15:00\nAttendees:\nJay Champaneri & Riaan Fox
